  • Use Jott to send text messages by voice

Managing Your Calendar

With the introduction of the push service it is now possible to make additions to your Google Calendar almost instantaneously.

In order to do this you will need to hook up your iPhone to an Exchange Server to give you the real time updates.

WARNING – If you set frequent pushes it will eat your battery time fast so I would recommend reducing the frequency of the push date or set it to manual or even shut if off so that it will only sync when you check your calendar. Otherwise it will push to you in real time frequently. If you have a busy schedule and want to know when things change the moment they change then go ahead and keep the Push setting up as high as you like.

Be additionally warned that some have said that the initial sync has wiped out all iPhone only appointments so be sure to back up your calendar before you try this.

Currently the public Exchange Server is run by Nueva Sync (more may follow) and you must-

Set up an account with Nueva Sync at:

http://www.nuevasync.com/

You cannot skip this step as without it your push service will not be active. Nueva Sync recently changed so that you only need to share your calendar information through Google if you are worried about the security of your e-mail service.

Apple Setup Instructions

Warning: this site is in beta use it with your data at your own risk. We advise testing with an emulator and test data.

To configure your Apple iPhone® 3G/2.0 and iPod® touch 2.0 to work with NuevaSync perform the following steps:

  • Before setting up your device, first configure your services on the NuevaSync site.
  • From the main menu screen open "Settings".
  • Select "Mail, Contacts, Calendar".
  • Select "Add Account".
  • Choose "Microsoft Exchange"
  • Under "Email", enter the e-mail address you used for NuevaSync registration. When you enter your e-mail address to sync, your device may warn you about a certificate being invalid. This is particularly likely if you use a GMail address. It isn't referring to our certificate or our service, so don't be concerned. It is part of Apple's auto-configuration feature as it tries to guess the appropriate server name based on your info. Our SSL certificate is valid and secure.
  • Under "Username" enter your NuevaSync username.
  • Under "Password" enter your NuevaSync password.
  • Under "Description" you can leave the default or enter a description of your choosing.
  • Tap "Next".
  • Your Apple device will display a message "Verifying Exchange account information" for a few moments.
  • When it has finished, it will display a new field, "Server".  Enter "www.nuevasync.com" as the value.
  • Tap "Next".
  • On the next page, turn off "Mail".  Also turn off any other category you do not wish to sync.  For example, if you want to sync only your calendar, make sure "Mail" and "Contacts" are both turned off.  If you want to sync contacts and calendar, all you should turn off is mail.
  • Tap "Save".

For calendar users only:

  • On the "Mail, Contacts, and Calendar" settings page, scroll to the very bottom.
  • Tap "Time Zone Support".
  • Toggle "Time Zone Support" off.  This will make sure that each calendar item is saved with the device's complete time zone information.

If you have any issues, try troubleshooting.

Windows Mobile Setup Instructions

Warning: this site is in beta use it with your data at your own risk. We advise testing with an emulator and test data.

To configure your Microsoft Windows Mobile device:

  • Before setting up your device, first configure your services on the NuevaSync site.
  • Open "Programs\ActiveSync".
  • Select "Menu\Add Server Source..."
  • Under "Server address" enter "www.nuevasync.com".  Make sure you leave the secure connection box checked.
  • Under "User name" enter your NuevaSync user name.
  • Under "Password" enter your NuevaSync password.
  • Under "Domain" enter "nuevasync.com".
  • Check the "Save password" box.
  • Tap "Next".
  • Uncheck "Mail" and "Tasks".  Also uncheck any other service you do not plan to use.  For example, if you want to sync only your calendar, make sure "Mail", "Contacts", and "Tasks" are all turned off.  If you want to sync contacts and calendar, only "Mail" and "Tasks" should be unchecked.
  • Tap "Finish".

After the above set up you will now have your iPhone and your Google account calendar linked in pratically real time. Set an event on your phone and check in your Google account and you should see it there on your desktop and vica versa.

Now that you have the 2 hooked up we can refer to the process as a  “Calendar System”.

Now that you have a calendar system you can go to the next step of putting events into your system by simply speaking into your phone.

To do this you will need an application called Jott. Jott performs a varity of functions such as converting your speech into text messages but it relates specifficly to this process as it will also add events to Google calendar with voice commands. Letting you stay hands free while you manage your calendar system. There are 2 parts 2 the Jott application. The web based profile and the free downlodable app via the iTunes store. First let us deal with the web based profile as that is the core of what we need to hook the voice up to the calendar system.

Set up an account with Jott

Go to:

https://jott.com/register.aspx

Register for a free account.

Validate your e-mail.

Log into your Jott account.

Once you have an account you need to make an entry in your contacts called “Jott” with the following phone #:

866-JOTT-123

Or

866-568-8123

Jott’s number is the same regardless of your phone. It checks the number you are dialing from and knows your account based off of that. Make this number one of your favorites or you can download the free Jott appt to see the Jotts you have made. Note: the Jott app will not call the Jott service, it will only help you manage existing Jotts so consider it a supportive fluff piece outside of our core process.

Inside your Jott account on the left navigation you will see your message and list manager. Useful in it’s own right but not necessary to understand for what we want to do. On the right side of the message/Jott list you will see the following sub sections:

Contacts

Create a group

Feeds

Links

We will come back to this area when we explore how to send text message by voice but for now we will focus on “Links”.

Links will allow you to speak into Jott and link your voice to the appropriate application. Depending on how many of the listed services you uses this area will have remarkable functionality. For now we will focus on “Google Calendar” in the link section..

Select “Google Calendar” in the link section.

Enter valid Calendar information (this is the same as your g-mail account info).

Once you have made this connection this is the flow for entering calendar :

You: Call 866-JOTT-123

Jott: Who do you want to Jott?

You: Google Calendar

Jott: Google Calendar, is this correct?

You: Yes

Jott: Beep!

You: Meet Andy for lunch tomorrow at noon.

Jott transcribes your message and sends it to your Google Calendar. Your message will be added to your calendar using Google's quick add feature.

If you have followed all the steps thus far you can now enter calendar events on your iPhone with only your voice.

Using Jott to write text Messages

Go to your Jott account log in.

Inside your Jott account on the left navigation you will see your message and list manager. On the right side of the message/Jott list you will see the following sub sections:

Contacts

Create a group

Feeds

Links

Select “Contacts”.

Once in Contacts click the orange link on top that says “Add Contacts

Type the first and last name of your contact. This is the name you will speak to Jott so it can recognize who you are sending to.

Type in the email address of the contact so Jott can send a copy of the text to e-mail.

Type in the phone number of the contact so Jott knows what number ot send the text message to.

Push the add button.

Now to text that person here is the flow:

You: Call 866-JOTT-123

Jott: Who do you want to Jott?

You: Angela

Jott: Angela, is this correct?

You: Yes

Jott: Beep!

You: Remember to call Mr. Warwick, W-a-r-w-i-c-k about dinner Saturday

Jott: Got it!

You: Hang up.

Jott sends Angela a text message and an email of the transcribed message, including an audio link.

These are the 2 main functions of Jott that I find applicable to the iPhone but also know it is capable of:

Reminders

To Do Lists

And Group Distribution Lists

Feel free to explore them.

Remember to download the free Jott Application in the apps store in the 2.0+ firmware to have an icon on your iPhone to manage and make new notes.
