Also, the iPod touch comes in a higher capacity model.... largest iPhone 3G is 16GB, the largest touch is 32GB. If you have a lot of music, it's something to consider.

Thread: How the Cell Network Works
Rich Mogull from TidBits has a great article on how cell phone networks work, and how your phone can get a call when you're half a world away. The Tidbits guys always do a great job making things simple and understandable, and this article...

Thread: Do you text more than you talk?
Wait, you can talk on your phone too?
(OK, I'm kidding. I think I still do more talking than texting, but not by much...)

Thread: Firmware 2.2 Beta 1 Released
The first beta of the iPhone firmware v2.2 is out the door.
No word yet on anything new it actually does, but we can always hope.
So excited that Google finally got Android out the door!
But that's for T-Mobile only; now when does it come to Sprint? What I've been reading says 'sometime in 2009'... lets hope 'sometime' really means 'early'
That's cool. I could swear that Verizon already had contract-free service, but I guess not. At least they've jumped on the bandwagon.

Apple (sadly but understandably) removed the download count for apps after the first day. But they said last week that they've had over 100MM downloads (free+paid), and TechCrunch predicts they'll hit 1BB by next summer.
So the real...

I don't have an iPhone, sadly, but TidBits did a report on it, and they're reporting that a lot of annoying little stuff has gotten fixed. For example, apparently the iPhone used to scramble your icons when you installed a new app, and now...

I'll be impressed if this even makes it to the Japanese market.... still, very cool!
While I initially had a snarky comment for this, I actually think its a great idea. Apple has had enormous success with their in-store training, and I think that it will probably work for sprint as well. The training doesn't do folks like...

AT&T actually has normal post-paid non-contract plans, but you have to go into the store to get them.

Thread: Green iPhone packaging?
Kudos to Apple for this, though.
They've always been known for their excellent packaging design: generally clean, elegant and minimalist. The fact they've added 'environmentally friendly' to the list is certainly a plus.

Yep. There were three reasons I didn't buy the original iPhone:
No third party software
No 3G
No tethering ability
So they've got #1 and #2 nailed... I do hope they figure out #3.
Thread: How standardized is Bluetooth?
Just wanted to get experiences from folks on how well their Bluetooth headsets have worked with their phones. I know that some phones (such as my lovely Treo 700p) really don't work well with many (if any) BT headsets, and it seems to be...

Thread: Where Cell Phones Go To Die
Wow. I had no idea that there was such a market for re-use. I knew that phones were recycled, but the fact they fix up 60% is pretty impressive. That's a lot of phones to be reused though... is the market (even the world market) still...

OK, fair enough. I guess there are certain phones you can't buy without a contract. I think the Instinct (Sprint) is another one. But AT&T does offer no-contract plans for its standard phones.

I may be wrong, but I think that nearly every carrier already DOES offer both options. Off the top of my head, I can't think of one that doesn't.
As much as I don't like them, I think the contracts make the most sense for both parties...

Guys-
Was just working on the third-party unlocking options in the How to Unlock a Cell Phone wiki, and realized there is one thing I don't know: where do thirty party unlocking companies get their codes from? Since you pay for them, I...

Huh. I didn't even know RIM was coming out with a touch BB.
Any interface shots leaked yet? And launch 'a few weeks' away... maybe, but that seems pretty quick.
