Top 10 cell phone etiquette rules people break

So in my internet travels, I came across this post on Mobilecommandos.com.  It's pretty funny.  But here are the 10 rules they lay out...

1. Talking too loudly

2. Holding inappropriate conversations in public.

3. Rudely interrupting conversations.

4. Checking your phone at the movies.

5. Texting while driving.

6. Texting while talking.

7. Texting small talk.

8. Loud and annoying ringtones.

9. Disturbing live performances.

10. Location location location

Are there any others that irritate you guys?

For number 7, it definitely irks me when friends send, "Hey, what are you up to?"  It's sort of like....dude...if you want to hang out, just ask.  If you don't...what does it matter what I'm up to?

Uh oh, I'm guilty of number 7. I'll just start texting whoever I can whenever I'm bored. For shame... :(

I'm guilty of at least a few of these, but I have to admit that number 4 is one of my pet peeves.  I guess I'm just a grumpy jerk, but when I go to the movies, all I want is people to sit and enjoy the film.  It's one of the few places I actually turn everything off for a couple of hours.

About a month ago, the guy in front of me probably sent 20 text messages during a single movie.  He also had the phone with the brightest screen in the world (scientific fact), I could see several other people turning and looking every time he flipped it open.  It's just so distracting and annoying.  And don't even get me started on the few times I've heard people actually answer their phone during a movie...

End rant.

I think I quit going to movies before mobile phones started causing problems in them.  I guess it didn't matter... I stopped going because people were rude, talking, generally being distracting, etc. Rude people will always have ways to be rude I guess :)

The rule that didn't make it is when you show someone your new phone and they start browsing and texting away on it, assuming you have all that attached to your plan.  A coworker cost me three bucks in five minutes during a meeting, I didn't even know what was happening.

Oh man, I'm with you unfortunately. I think it's a personality type or something...if I don't have a magazine or my laptop on the train, I'm a texting machine...it's sad, but true. I have broken the movie theater habit though...I did it once, was appropriately reprimanded, realized how lame it was, and never did it again.

I would say another horrible one is incessant acceptance of "hey, sorry, got another call...just a sec."

One other one that I've heard other people complain about (that I do) is making a lot of calls from the car. I've been given the guilt trip, "oh, I'm only good enough to call when you're captive and have nothing better to do?!" And honestly, it just feels efficient to me.

I have found that #1 is very easy to do, but I don't believe people are doing it on purpose.

On regular landline phones, you can hear your voice come through the earpiece.  On a mobile phone, you usually don't hear this.  I think this unconsciously prompts us to talk louder because we are used to hearing "more" of our voice than we do when talking on a mobile phone.

#1 is a funny one for me because I manage a retail store and people come in with their Nextels, chirping away and you can hear the entire conversation. Are you kidding me people? I really don't wanna know how phat that pair of Tims at the mall was yo.

Oh man...talk about one I totally forgot.  Just the PTT (push to talk) feature in public is as annoying as it gets.  As soon as there's more than one or two back and forths, wouldn't it have been much easier to just make a call?

I think 1 & 2 go hand in hand a lot of times. 

I did see a pretty bad example of 5 yesterday.  I was driving across the Golden Gate bridge, Sunday evening....lots of traffic...on a bridge.  And the guy next to me had a cigarette in one hand and his Blackberry in the other.  I literally watched him for five minutes driving on the bridge with the occasional finger on the wheel and the occasional eye off his text.  It was ridiculous.  His window was down (and I was front seat passenger)....I almost said something.  But I'm not that confrontational.

So similar to the top 10 etiquette rules, MobileCommandos published a "Top 7 ways cell phones can screw you" list.  It's kind of entertaining.

1. They aid drunk dialing
2. They embarrass you in public

4. They make unwitting upskirt shots easier
