I was under the impression that they were the same, but apparently it's 2 different services? Any clarity would be appreciated.

Unlocking simply means clearing the phone's software setting so that the phone can be used on any network (AT&T, T-mobile, Fido etc...)

Debranding removes those anoying logos (like verizon, at&t, t-mobile ), predefined themes, images, sounds, locked WAP profiles and links. Debranding gives your phone a brand new look plus
frees up its memory (if you care)

*Debranding will only remove the network software from your phone it wont remove the network lock.
