Apple and AT&T really want us to load the new firmware

I just got a text message that reads:

"A free message from Apple and AT&T: An important software update for iPhone 3G has been available on iTunes since this past Monday.  To get it, simply synch your iPhone 3G with iTunes and click the 'Check For Update' button."

They must think that the firmware update significantly improves reception or something (not what I've experienced).  The bad press must be annoying them as well.

Yeah, I've heard a lot of people complaining the new firmware doesn't do much to help with the reception problems. Steve Jobs did say that it would get fixed 'by September' if I recall correctly, so maybe they're still working on it. Hopefully.

This firmware fixed a bug in the previous version that caused the iPhone to call for more power than it needed from the cellular towers. This meant that just a few iPhones coule effectively render a tower overcapacity! Oops. DDoS attack on AT&T's network.

It has been addressed in all firmware since, of course, and a few features of the newer firmware is having more people upgrade.
