Mobile Marketing Association says Bluetooth spam is OK

News by Ricky Cadden on Wednesday August 27, 2008.

The U.S. based Mobile Marketing Association recently declared that unsolicited Bluetooth spam is OK, according to its published guidelines. The MMA believes that any device left in 'discoverable' mode is implicitly opting in to receive pushed advertisements. The group is soliciting comments on its new guidelines on its website through September 26th, 2008.

The UK's Direct Marketing Association, on the other hand, firmly stands behind an opt-in stance, whereby the consumer should consciously decide to opt-in to receiving advertisements before being sent any.

If you use Bluetooth on your cell phone, it seems that it would be prudent to leave it in 'hidden' mode. While this will not completely eliminate the possibility of receiving Bluetooth advertisements, it will greatly reduce the chances. [via: The Register Hardware]

Wonderful, just another way to get bombarded with spam.

Wow...that's just awful.  It that were to become common, talk about a great way to make it so all new handsets come preset to 'hidden.'  Just imagine what walking around a mall would be like...your phone would never stop vibrating.
