Green iPhone packaging?

So I just stumbled across this in the Triple Pundit archives from the end of June...

It's faster, it's cheaper, it's just as beautiful, and now it's greener--at least its packaging is. Apple, the same company that got bruised in its fistfight with Greenpeace last year, literally just announced that its new iPhone 3G, in all of the glory of its already unprecedented demand, will arrive next Friday outfitted in green packaging.

According to the Register, Apple has ordered millions of potato starch paper trays from PaperFoam, the same Dutch company that supplies Motorola with packaging its products. The result--a 90 percent reduction in carbon footprint over plastic and a tray made entirely from a natural resource, as opposed to the visually appealing but environmentally appalling Styrofoam my MacBook Pro arrived in. Anyone with the phone notice the difference?  Or maybe y'all were too excited for the phone to notice the other stuff.

If no one noticed a problem with the packaging then it the old style was definitely not worth the extra carbon footprint!

Yeah, I figure as long as it gets the job down with protecting the thing you actually want...all the more reason to switch over.

I could personally care less what packaging looks like once the box is open... it either gets thrown away, recycled, or stored away until the warranty expires anyway.

Kudos to Apple for this, though.

They've always been known for their excellent packaging design: generally clean, elegant and minimalist. The fact they've added 'environmentally friendly' to the list is certainly a plus.
