How much money are people making in the App Store?

Apple (sadly but understandably) removed the download count for apps after the first day. But they said last week that they've had over 100MM downloads (free+paid), and TechCrunch predicts they'll hit 1BB by next summer.

So the real question: how much money are developers making on the app store? I have to guess that some are in the millions of dollars already, but I'm not sure....

Without knowing the ratio of free-to-paid downloads, it's hard to estimate a dollar amount.

Turns out you can get an idea of the ratio of paid to free downloads.

Open up the iTunes app store.  Hit the "All iPhone apps" category.  Sort by "Most Popular".

4 apps out of the first 4 pages (21 apps per page) are paid.  The other 80 are free. Taking that as a (very) rough approximation, that gives us a 5% paid-to-free ratio -- meaning 95 million free downloads, and 5 million paid ones.  Assuming an average of $5 per sale, and subtracting apple's 30% cut, you're looking at a bit under $20 million in developer revenue.

Looks like Kleiner Perkins' $100 million in iPhone app developer investments aren't going to pay off overnight.
