Skyfire launches public beta

If you have a Windows Mobile or Nokia N-series or E-series S60 3rd Edition phone it's your lucky day.  You finally have a legitimate browser alternative, go get the Skyfire Beta now:

www.skyfire.com

They updated the software from version 0.6 to 0.8.  It includes improved video support, faster page loading, the ability to download images and PDFs and several interface improvements.

Anyone who has a compatible phone, let us know what you think.

Looks like the registration process is screwed up if you were already on the waiting list.  When I try to register on the download form, it tells me my number is already registered.  When I try to log in, it says "This account has not yet been verified. We will notify you when a space is available"

I'll contact support, but I figured I'd give anyone else who might run into a similar problem a heads up.

They apparently went through a major site redesign, and in the process, neglected to keep any of their support pages up.  The best I could do was email info@skyfire.com

The info@skyfire.com autoresponder includes links to a couple of support pages, both of which are now 404s.

Registered using my wife's phone number, and had her forward the SMS to my phone.  That worked.

Biggest improvement I noticed was optional text wrapping, so you can actually read stuff now.

Youtube works better now, too.  Seems to perform a little better, and it's now easy to automatically position the screen so it's directly over the video playback area, giving you almost perfectly centered fullscreen video (at a few frames per second)

The search bar it puts on your homescreen is nice for quick access.

Still no option to have it prefetch (meaning scrolling around a page involves a lot of "read, scroll, wait for loading" cycles), nor tabbed browsing.  Maybe in the next release :)

Well, 40 hours later, skyfire responded to my support request...

with a canned email telling me that skyfire is a browser, and thanking me "for my support".  Ticket closed.

Given that I received this response at midnight pacific, I can't help but guess that response was carefully selected by someone overseas working for $2/hr.

I was really excited about their product, but they seem pretty stunningly incompetent when it comes to customer support.
