A phone for travelling with?

My wife and I are off to Vietnam for our honeymoon in January, and I'm thinking about options for keeping in touch with our family and friends.

One option I am thinking about is buying a pre-paid SIM card and using something like Twitter to send updates.

Has anyone had any experience buying pre paid SIM card for international travel online? Are there any things to look out for? Any good websites to buy from?

Thanks!

Sounds like a great honeymoon, congrats!  How long are you guys going for?

I'd suggest picking up a prepaid SIM once you arrive in Vietnam.  I've never been there but when I went to Thailand it was much cheaper to wait and get it there.  That seems to be the easiest thing to do for most overseas travel these days.  That way you'll also be able to get a SIM from an actual local carrier instead of some odd middle man.

The bigger concern would be if the phone you're taking is compatible with the local network and making sure it's unlocked so it will work with another SIM.

Sorry the delay in replying!

Thanks, :) We are only in Vietnam for two weeks (the other three weeks are split between New Zealand and London) but we figure that should be enough time to at least experience some of Vietnam. It's our first time to Asia so I keep going back and forth between being incredibly excited and a anxious. How was Thailand? How did you find Asia in general?

Ah - good thinking on buying it there. I have an old phone I had in New Zealand that I think will work there.

Wow, circling the globe.  New Zealand, Vietnam and London...I'm jealous.

My brother was working in Bangkok for six months so I couldn't pass up the opportunity to go.  We had an incredible time in Bangkok and traveled up to Chiang Mai in the northern part of the country as well.  It was a fantastic trip, I'd recommend it to anyone.  The best part was how insanely inexpensive everything was.  I still can't believe how little I spent.

Thailand is the only country I've been to in Asia, but the people were wonderful, always kind and inviting.  It's a beautiful country and the food was amazing.  It almost ruined Thai food for me...nothing here even comes close to the real thing.  I hope you guys have a similar experience in Vietnam.
