3G coverage in the mid-atlantic

I've heard AT&T has farily dense 3G coverage on the west coast and their latest map shows good penetration in the east, but any opinions on actual coverage as well as the transition between edge/3G as you travel? Like to many others, I'm thinking of plunking down the cash and commitment of the new 3G Iphone, but have trouble justifiing if the 3G coverage is spotty.

 

I'm mainly concerned with the Washington, DC to Richmond corridor for anyoen with experience in that region
